Granular Ice Melt Application Tips
Clear the snow and then apply the granular ice melt.
Whether you are plowing, shoveling, or snow blowing the snow, it must be cleared away before you put down the ice melt. If you skip this crucial step, you’ll be wasting your ice melt as it cannot burn through snow and ice. You may also end up using too much ice melt trying to get the ice to melt through the snow. Clearing the snow away before putting the ice melt will save you a lot of time and money in the long run! We also recommend using our anti icers which will use 8X less material.
Use the proper safety equipment while applying ice melt.
Always follow the safety instructions on the ice melt you are going to apply. If you are not sure what to use for safety equipment or you cannot read the instructions, the standard safety equipment for applying ice melt is gloves and goggles. If possible, it is a good idea to use a spreader to apply the ice melt. Not only is this safer because you don’t have to touch the ice melt with your hands but it also allows you to evenly apply the ice melt.
Don’t apply too much granular ice melt.
With ice melt, sometimes less is more. Applying a large amount of ice melt will not make it work faster or better. You are more likely to end up tracking it all of your property and getting it all over your indoor space. Some types of granular ice melt will also burn vegetation and if you use more of it than needed, it may end up all over your grass and landscaping. To avoid wasting too much product, always follow the directions and use the right amount for the level of ice that you are dealing with.
Don’t buy cheap ice melt.
Using cheaper ice melt may result in ice that doesn’t melt and overuse of the product. A lower price may help you for a short-term solution but if you have to use a lot of it then it is really not a lower price in the long run. You should also remember that each variety of ice melt has different melting temperatures and may affect plant life and concrete differently. When picking your ice melt, choose a type that is geared to your specific weather conditions, temperatures, and facility needs.
